Hi, my name is Mitch Ryan and I am a sports performance coach at Fitness Quest 10. My passion for what I do comes from my childhood love of sports. My Fitness Journey begins in a small mining town in northern California called Jackson that consisted of about 3,000 people. Because the town was so small, there was not much to do after school; basically the exact opposite of where we live now in San Diego.
However, because there weren’t many kid activities after school, I found myself always playing different kinds of sports. Since they were all we had to do for fun, I quickly excelled at them; specifically in Football, Basketball and Track. Throughout my youth and High School Leagues, I earned multiple MVP and 1st Team All-League awards in each sport. But my success didn’t come from raw natural talent; it came because I worked harder at it than anyone else. When I wasn’t playing or practicing, I was finding other ways to get better by spending time gaining size and strength in the weight room. My little brother and I would spend 2-4 hours at the gym on a daily basis because that was what we needed to do in order to be the best. Some days, it was a grind, however we kept at it and all the hard work paid off.
My passion for football and my excitement for San Diego came together when I went to play college football as a tight end at the University of San Diego. I started off as your typical tall and skinny practice squad player with not much opportunity but I decided to implement the same tactics as I did in high school, which was to work harder than everyone else. That once again paid off. My senior year I was selected to 1st team All-Conference and had hopes of being picked up in the NFL draft. An unfortunate knee injury half-way through my senior season kept that from happening.
I did not give up there. I spent another 2 years training, getting bigger, faster and stronger than I ever was before. I earned tryouts with 6 different NFL teams that unfortunately didn’t work out because of my size, position and mostly bad luck.
When it came time to get a “real job” I started looking into different business careers to follow my Business major in college. I quickly realized that I didn’t want to sit behind a desk all day… Football was my passion and I wanted to discover a way that I could play it forever. Reflecting on my college experience, I realized that working out and training hard was my favorite part of football so I thought I could turn that into a career by being a personal trainer. I was referred to Fitness Quest 10 to try out their internship program, which I did.
After a couple days of the internship, I knew this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. That internship was 5 years ago and I am very thankful for the opportunities and trust that Fitness Quest 10 has had in me throughout my career as a trainer. I can confidently say that I get the privilege to work at one of the best gyms in the country with the best clients in the country.
