Mentor Lesson #3: How to be More Productive with Your Time

It is said that when the pupil is ready the teacher will appear.

That’s exactly what happened in the spring of 1998. I was getting ready to launch my business, Fitness Quest 10, and had little clue on how to do this.

I didn’t have a name for my business.
I didn’t know how to incorporate.
I didn’t know how to register the business as a DBA.
I didn’t know how to put someone on payroll.
I didn’t know how to do a business plan. Heck, I didn’t even know what a business plan was.
I didn’t have any systems in place.

I just knew I wanted a training business to help people improve their lives.

And then I met Wayne Cotton. Wayne was living at the same condo complex as me. And I started training he and his wife Brenda. And we immediately connected on a higher level.

He was an uber-successful businessman. He was a member of the “Million Dollar Roundtable,” which was an extremely big honor and accolade in his industry. And he was a man of soul. Needless to say, we connected and bonded.

The teacher appeared. And I was ready.

He heard my vision and dream about my future business. He felt my passion and conviction. And he began to work with me.

Writing exercises. Words of wisdom. He had me read books. And he facilitated these life and business strategy writing sessions on a yellow legal pad and had me write down the answers to his questions. It was awesome.

I have learned a ton of lessons from Wayne in 16+ years. Way more than I can put in this space today. But here are a few:

  • “When you build it, build it like you are going to build 500. Even if you only want one, you must systemize your entire one business.”
  • “Fear, Frustration and Failure, are overcome with Faith, Forward-thinking, and Follow-through.”
  • “Life is a not a marathon. It’s a series of sprints. Sprint-recover-sprint-recover-sprint-recover.”

But perhaps the greatest lesson I learned from Wayne deals with my time and energy management. It’s a system of organizing your time and life for maximum productivity.

Wayne taught me his 4 color-coded calendar system that produces BIG results.

In a nutshell, there are 4 colors on the calendar:

  • Green (Green-Machine): money-making time
  • Yellow (Mellow-Yellow): time off and vacation time to recharge the batteries
  • Red (Red-Tape): organizational time
  • Blue (Blue-Sky): focused time working “ON” your business and not “IN” in your business; this is all about creating specific strategy for your life and business and then action steps to accomplish your dreams

Every color is VERY important. But the one that has most influenced my success coincidentally is “Blue-Sky” time and “Mellow-yellow.” Especially if you want more “green-machine.”

What is Blue-Sky Time?

  • Time for dreaming and setting BHAG’s (big, hairy, audacious goals).
  • Time for strategizing.
  • Time for planning HOW to create more “green-machine” time.
  • Time for planning HOW to get more time-freedom.
  • Time for creating the business & life you most desire.

Blue-Sky time is focused, guided, and deliberate. It is time for processing that allows you to create, write down, and commit to your PLAN for success. But you MUST plan for it. Otherwise, it will not get done. And it should be done at a minimum of 3 days per quarter.

What is Mellow-Yellow Time?

This is vacation time. It’s time-off. It’s time away from the gym. It’s time in the mountains. Or at the beach. Or in nature. Or wherever inspires you.

Essentially, your BIG ideas come when you are away. When your mind is relaxed and inspired.

And when you more often combine the much necessary (and often-needed) mellow-yellow time with the essential blue-sky time, you have a recipe for success.

So take more mellow-yellow time. And start including more blue-sky time to work “ON” your business instead of “IN” your business. I’m telling you—it’s an absolute game-changer.

Wayne has taught me enough lessons that I could probably write a book just on them. But these are the most important pearls I could share with you today to help you craft your best business and life.

Now go plan a vacation or get to work ON your business.
